2222 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE 19
2323 STATE OF ARKANSAS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN: 20

2525 WHEREAS, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (“HCM”) is a chronic 22
2626 cardiovascular disease involving thickening of the heart m uscle and can 23
2727 potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and serious complications including 24
2828 heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and in rare cases sudden cardiac 25
2929 death; and 26

3131 WHEREAS, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease and can 28
3232 affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity with a reported 29
3333 prevalence ranging from one (1) in two hundred (200) to one (1) in five 30
3434 hundred (500) in the general population; and 31

3636 WHEREAS, an estimated seven hundred thousand (700,000) people in the 33
3737 United States have HCM, yet eighty -five percent (85%) of them may remain 34
3838 undiagnosed; and 35

4444 WHEREAS, HCM shares symptoms with other common cardiovascular and 1
4545 pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, 2
4646 palpitations, and fainting, makin g it difficult to distinguish HCM from these 3
4747 other diseases; and 4

4949 WHEREAS, all-cause mortality risk is three (3) to four (4) times higher 6
5050 in patients with HCM than that of the general population; and 7

5252 WHEREAS, knowing one’s medical history and any si gns and symptoms of 9
5353 HCM is an important first step in receiving an accurate diagnosis of HCM; and 10

5555 WHEREAS, a healthcare provider must conduct a thorough screening with 12
5656 cardiac health questions to help identify a risk of cardiac disorders both 13
5757 genetic and congenital; and 14

5959 WHEREAS, a healthcare provider may conduct several tests, including an 16
6060 echocardiogram, a cardiac magnetic resonance image, or genetic testing to 17
6161 confirm a family history of HCM, and must examine the heart to diagnose HCM; 18

6464 WHEREAS, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for patients to 21
6565 work with their healthcare provider to learn more about their disease and 22
6666 understand different management options, including prescription medicines and 23
6767 surgical treatment options that may help ; and 24

6969 WHEREAS, the fourth Wednesday in February is an appropriate day to 26
7070 observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day, 27

7373 BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THE 30
7474 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THER EIN; 31

7676 THAT the General Assembly: 33
7777 (1) Recognize and designate the fourth Wednesday in February of 34
7878 each year as “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day” in the State of 35
7979 Arkansas in order to raise public awareness about hypertrophic 36 SCR3

8585 (2) Acknowledge the critical importance of hypertrophic 2
8686 cardiomyopathy awareness to improve cardiovascular health in the State of 3
8787 Arkansas; 4
8888 (3) Support raising awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed 5
8989 and untreated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the need to seek appropriate 6
9090 care for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a serious public health issue; and 7
9191 (4) Respectfully request the Governor to annually issue a 8
9292 proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in February in the State of 9
9393 Arkansas as “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day” and call upon the 10
9494 people in the State of Arkansas to observe the day with appropriate programs 11
9595 and activities. 12
