BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE 19 
STATE OF ARKANSAS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN: 20 
 21 
 WHEREAS, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (“HCM”) is a chronic 22 
cardiovascular disease involving thickening of the heart m uscle and can 23 
potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and serious complications including 24 
heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and in rare cases sudden cardiac 25 
death; and 26 
 27 
 WHEREAS, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease and can 28 
affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity with a reported 29 
prevalence ranging from one (1) in two hundred (200) to one (1) in five 30 
hundred (500) in the general population; and 31 
 32 
 WHEREAS, an estimated seven hundred thousand (700,000) people in the 33 
United States have HCM, yet eighty -five percent (85%) of them may remain 34 
undiagnosed; and  35

 WHEREAS, HCM shares symptoms with other common cardiovascular and 1 
pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, 2 
palpitations, and fainting, makin g it difficult to distinguish HCM from these 3 
other diseases; and    4 
 5 
 WHEREAS, all-cause mortality risk is three (3) to four (4) times higher 6 
in patients with HCM than that of the general population; and 7 
 8 
 WHEREAS, knowing one’s medical history and any si gns and symptoms of 9 
HCM is an important first step in receiving an accurate diagnosis of HCM; and  10 
 11 
 WHEREAS, a healthcare provider must conduct a thorough screening with 12 
cardiac health questions to help identify a risk of cardiac disorders both 13 
genetic and congenital; and 14 
 15 
 WHEREAS, a healthcare provider may conduct several tests, including an 16 
echocardiogram, a cardiac magnetic resonance image, or genetic testing to 17 
confirm a family history of HCM, and must examine the heart to diagnose HCM; 18 
and 19 
 20 
 WHEREAS, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for patients to 21 
work with their healthcare provider to learn more about their disease and 22 
understand different management options, including prescription medicines and 23 
surgical treatment options that may help ; and 24 
 25 
 WHEREAS, the fourth Wednesday in February is an appropriate day to 26 
observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day, 27 
 28 
NOW THEREFORE,  29 
BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THE 30 
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THER EIN; 31 
 32 
 THAT the General Assembly: 33 
 (1)  Recognize and designate the fourth Wednesday in February of 34 
each year as “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day” in the State of 35 
Arkansas in order to raise public awareness about hypertrophic 36    	SCR3

cardiomyopathy; 1 
 (2)  Acknowledge the critical importance of hypertrophic 2 
cardiomyopathy awareness to improve cardiovascular health in the State of 3 
Arkansas;  4 
 (3)  Support raising awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed 5 
and untreated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the need to seek appropriate 6 
care for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a serious public health issue; and 7 
 (4)  Respectfully request the Governor to annually issue a 8 
proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in February in the State of 9 
Arkansas as “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day” and call upon the 10 
people in the State of Arkansas to observe the day with appropriate programs 11 
and activities. 12
