1919 WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and 16
2020 throughout our history citizens have stepped up to meet our challenges by 17
2121 volunteering in their communities; and 18

2323 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for nearly two hundred 20
2424 thousand (200,000) Americans each year to serve their country through an 21
2525 intensive commitment to service at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and 22
2626 community and faith-based groups across the country; and 23

2828 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps enriches the lives of its members, building habits 25
2929 that create engaged citizens who are active participants in civic matters 26
3030 affecting their communities long after their service terms are completed; and 27

3232 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members encourage collaboration and partnerships, 29
3333 leveraging millions of volunteers in service and acquiring the support of 30
3434 business partners to increase the effectiveness of their initiatives; and 31

3636 WHEREAS, in Arkansas, more than two thousand f ive hundred (2,500) 33
3737 AmeriCorps members of various ages and backgrounds helped to meet local needs 34
3838 at more than three hundred (300) locations in the state by tutoring or 35

4646 WHEREAS, in exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members develop 3
4747 valuable work skills, earn money for continuing education, and strengthen the 4
4848 lives of their families, their communities, and the state as a whole; and 5

5050 WHEREAS, since AmeriCorps was founded in 1993, more than eleven 7
5151 thousand (11,000) residents in Arkansas have served approximately eighteen 8
5252 million (18,000,000) hours through AmeriCorps and have received higher 9
5353 education and loan reimbursement from the Segal Am eriCorps Education Award 10
5454 totaling more than thirty -six million dollars ($36,000,000); and 11

5656 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication 13
5757 and commitment of the more than one million (1,000,000) Americans who have 14
5858 chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and their community 15
5959 partners, and to encourage more Americans to follow their footsteps in 16
