ARKANSAS.  9

AMERICORPS WEEK IN ARKANSAS. 14 
 15 
 WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and 16 
throughout our history citizens have stepped up to meet our challenges by 17 
volunteering in their communities; and 18 
 19 
 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for nearly two hundred 20 
thousand (200,000) Americans each year to serve their country through an 21 
intensive commitment to service at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and 22 
community and faith-based groups across the country; and  23 
 24 
 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps enriches the lives of its members, building habits 25 
that create engaged citizens who are active participants in civic matters 26 
affecting their communities long after their service terms are completed; and  27 
 28 
 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members encourage collaboration and partnerships, 29 
leveraging millions of volunteers in service and acquiring the support of 30 
business partners to increase the effectiveness of their initiatives; and 31 
 32 
 WHEREAS, in Arkansas, more than two thousand f ive hundred (2,500) 33 
AmeriCorps members of various ages and backgrounds helped to meet local needs 34 
at more than three hundred (300) locations in the state by tutoring or 35 
mentoring children and youth, restoring the environment, increasing food 36     	SR24

security, and responding to disasters; and 1

 WHEREAS, in exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members develop 3 
valuable work skills, earn money for continuing education, and strengthen the 4 
lives of their families, their communities, and the state as a whole; and 5 
 6 
 WHEREAS, since AmeriCorps was founded in 1993, more than eleven 7 
thousand (11,000) residents in Arkansas have served approximately eighteen 8 
million (18,000,000) hours through AmeriCorps and have received higher 9 
education and loan reimbursement from the Segal Am eriCorps Education Award 10 
totaling more than thirty -six million dollars ($36,000,000); and 11 
 12 
 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication 13 
and commitment of the more than one million (1,000,000) Americans who have 14 
chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and their community 15 
partners, and to encourage more Americans to follow their footsteps in 16 
service, 17 
 18 
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL 19 
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS: 20 
 21 
 THAT the Senate thank AmeriCorps members for their service and proclaim 22 
the week of March 13 -17, 2023, as AmeriCorps Week in Arkansas. 23 
 24 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption, an appropriate copy of this 25 
resolution shall be provided to Ms. Shana Chaplin of EngageAR by the 26 
Secretary of the Senate. 27
