 BILL NUMBER: SJR 6AMENDED BILL TEXT AMENDED IN SENATE JUNE 9, 2015 INTRODUCED BY Senator Stone (Coauthors: Senators Allen, Anderson, Bates, Berryhill, Fuller, Hertzberg, Huff, Morrell, Nguyen, and Vidak) MARCH 17, 2015 Relative to Iran. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SJR 6, as amended, Stone. Iran: negotiations: nuclear program. This measure would declare that the Legislature of the State of California supports finding the best long-term solution for peace and  disarmament   security  in the Middle East and a nuclear-free Iran, and believes that any agreement signed with Iran should provide for ongoing international oversight. Fiscal committee: no. WHEREAS, The people of the State of California support efforts to promote peace and prosperity across the globe; and WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of California recognizes the importance of maintaining a diplomatic dialogue in the Middle East, especially as it pertains to Israel and Iran; and WHEREAS, The proliferation of nuclear capability in the Middle East will certainly present additional complications in an already diplomatically tense region; and  WHEREAS, The Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015 was designed to strengthen American diplomatic efforts with Iran; and   WHEREAS, The Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015 complies with the commitment the President made that the United States would impose no new sanctions during the course of negotiations with Iran; and  WHEREAS, The goal and intent of negotiations with Iran  was   is  to require that Iran dismantle its nuclear program;  and   now, therefore, be it   WHEREAS, The proposed agreement being presently negotiated will have a sunset period after which the future of international oversight on Iran's nuclear ambitions may be unclear; now, therefore, be it  Resolved by the Senate and the Assembly of the State of California, jointly, That the Legislature of the State of California supports finding the best long-term solution for peace and  disarmament   security  in the Middle East and a nuclear-free Iran; and be it further Resolved, That the Legislature of the State of California believes if any agreement is signed with Iran, the agreement should provide for ongoing international oversight and Iran's cooperation in maintaining transparency with its nuclear ambitions; and be it further Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the President and the Vice President of the United States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to the Majority Leader of the Senate, to each Senator and Representative from California in the Congress of the United States, and to the author for appropriate distribution.
