Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, Thyroid Eye Disease, or TED, is a serious, progressive, and rare autoimmune condition, in which the bodys immune system mistakenly attacks healthy muscle and fat tissue behind the eye causing inflammation and scar tissue to form; andWHEREAS, People living with TED often have debilitating symptoms, including eye bulging, double vision, blurred vision, pain, and facial disfigurement. In more severe cases, it can lead to blindness; andWHEREAS, People living with TED often experience long-term functional, psychosocial, and economic burdens, such as the inability to work or perform basic functions for daily living; andWHEREAS, The exact underlying process that causes TED is not fully understood, and the disease is a serious, vision-threatening condition that is capable of worsening over time; andWHEREAS, TED is a rare disease that affects an estimated 16 out of every 100,000 women and less than 3 out of every 100,000 men; andWHEREAS, Cases of TED, although rare, do affect approximately 7,500 Californians per year; andWHEREAS, A diagnosis of TED is based upon identification of characteristic symptoms, a detailed patient history, a thorough clinical evaluation, and a variety of specialized tests. There is a genetic component to the condition, and people who have a family member with the disease, or any other autoimmune disease, are at a greater risk of developing TED; andWHEREAS, Thyroid Eye Disease Awareness Week has been established at the national level through a collaboration between advocacy groups, including the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, Inc., the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research, the Graves Disease and Thyroid Foundation, Prevent Blindness, and the National Biotechnology Innovation Organization; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly declares the week of November 14, 2021, to November 20, 2021, inclusive, as Thyroid Eye Disease Awareness Week to increase awareness of TED and its impacts; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
