PUEBLO BY NORTH KOREA.102 WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Pueblo was originally launched as a1 United States Army cargo ship in 1944 but was transferred to the United2 States Navy and renamed the U.S.S. Pueblo in 1966; and3 WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Pueblo was named for the city of Pueblo,4 Colorado, and the county of Pueblo, Colorado, and was the third ship in5 the naval fleet to bear the name Pueblo; and6 WHEREAS, After leaving Japan in early January 1968 on an7 intelligence mission, the U.S.S. Pueblo, the ship was in international waters at the time2 of the attack; and3 WHEREAS, One crew member of the U.S.S. Pueblo was killed4 during the attack, and eighty crew members and two civilian5 oceanographers were captured and held for eleven months by the North6 Korean government; and7 WHEREAS, This year marks the fifty-fourth anniversary of North8 Korea's attack on the U.S.S. Pueblo and her crew; and9 WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Pueblo is still in commission in the10 United States Navy but continues to be held by the North Korean11 government and is currently a museum in Pyongyang, North Korea; now,12 therefore,13 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-third14 General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:15 (1) That we, the members of the General Assembly, recognize the16 bravery and sacrifice of the crew of the U.S.S. Pueblo;17 (2) That we take pride in the fact that the U.S.S. Pueblo bears the18 name of a city and a county in Colorado, and, therefore, the citizens of19 Colorado should be aware of the incident that occurred with the U.S.S.20 Pueblo fifty-four years ago;21 (3) That we continue the call for Kim Jong Un and the North22 Korean government to return the U.S.S. Pueblo to the people of the23 United States; and24 (4) That we hereby designate January 23 of each year as "U.S.S.25 Pueblo Day", a day to remember and honor the brave crew of the U.S.S.26 Pueblo.27 Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent28 to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.; Governor Jared Polis; President Pro29 Tempore of the United States Senate Patrick Leahy; Speaker of the30 United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi; and the members31 of Colorado's Congressional delegation.32 1013 -2-
