2121 AN ACT CONCERNING A PLAN FOR THE RETENTION OF STUDENTS

2323 MATHEMATICS AT PUBLI C INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION.
2424 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
2525 Assembly convened:

2727 Section 1. (NEW) (Effective July 1, 2019) (a) Not later than January 1, 1
2828 2020, the Board of Trustees of The University of Connecticut and the 2
2929 Board of Regents for Higher Education shall each establish a program 3
3030 to provide support and resources for the retention of students 4
3131 studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the 5
3232 public institutions of higher education within each board's jurisdiction. 6
3333 Such program for each public institution of higher education shall 7
3434 include, but need not be limited to, (1) a plan to identify at-risk 8
3535 students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics 9
3636 before any such student fails to successfully complete a course, course 10
3737 of study or degree program or terminates his or her enrollment at the 11
3838 institution, (2) the establishment of work-study opportunities for 12
3939 students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics to 13
4040 offer weekly tutoring sessions to other students at the institution, (3) 14

4847 level science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses, and 16
4948 (4) the provision of academic advisors to such students with the goal of 17
5049 achieving the ratio of three hundred twenty students studying science, 18
5150 technology, engineering and mathematics to one academic advisor for 19
5251 such students. As used in this subsection, "adaptive learning 20
5352 technology" means a computer-based or online educational system 21
5453 that modifies the presentation of material in response to student 22
5554 performance. 23
5655 (b) Not later than January 1, 2021, and annually thereafter, the 24
5756 Board of Trustees of The University of Connecticut and the Board of 25
5857 Regents for Higher Education shall each report, in accordance with the 26
5958 provisions of section 11-4a of the general statutes, to the joint standing 27
6059 committee of the General Assembly having cognizance of matters 28
6160 relating to higher education and employment advancement on the 29
6261 program established pursuant to subsection (a) of this section. 30
