AN ACT CONCERNING THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF 
PROBATE COURT JUDGES. 
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General 
Assembly convened: 
 
That chapter 801 of the general statutes be amended to provide that: 1 
(1) a Probate Court judge (A) shall devote full-time to the judge's judicial 2 
duties, and may not engage in the practice of law, nor be a partner, 3 
member or associate of a law firm; and (B) shall not act as an arbitrator, 4 
referee or compensated mediator nor engage in the conduct of any other 5 
profession or business that interferes with the performance of judicial 6 
duties; (2) the provisions of subdivision (1) of this section shall take 7 
effect January 5, 2027, except that for each Probate Court judge elected 8 
for a term that begins on or after January 5, 2027, and who continues to 9 
serve without a break in service, the provisions of subdivision (1) of this 10 
section shall take effect January 9, 2031. 11 
Statement of Purpose:   
To establish requirements applicable to Probate Court judges that 
eliminate potential conflicts of interest, enhance professionalism and 
conform with requirements applicable to other members of the 
judiciary.
