1321 RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE PROVISIONS OF THE TREATY OF
1422 HARTFORD OF 1638 THAT SOUGHT TO ERADICATE THE PEQUOT
1523 CULTURAL IDENTITY.

18-WHEREAS, the Treaty of Hartford was agreed to by the English 1
19-inhabitants in Connecticut on September 21, 1638, to end the Pequot 2
20-War; and 3
26+WHEREAS, the Treaty of Hartford was an agreement between the 1
27+English inhabitants in Connecticut and the Narragansett and Mohegan 2
28+Tribes entered into on September 21, 1638, to end the Pequot War; and 3
2129 WHEREAS, said treaty sought to eradicate the Pequot cultural 4
2230 identity by prohibiting the Pequots from returning to their lands, 5
23-abolishing their tribal name and forcing them to assimilate and the 6
24-remaining members of the Pequot Tribe to be sold into slavery or killed. 7
25-NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Connecticut General 8
26-Assembly pause in its deliberations to condemn the provisions of the 9
27-treaty authorizing the selling, murdering or maiming of a Native 10
28-American tribe and reiterate its support of the Native American tribes 11
29-in this state and our successful partnership with them. 12
