13-To recognize and congratulate the Saint John’s College Boys ’ Basketball team for winning the
14-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Boys’ Basketball Championship.

16-WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, established in 1851 is the second- oldest
17-Christian Brothers school in the United States;

19-WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, located in northwest Washington, D.C.,
20-remains a bastion of academic excellence, with 100% of St. John’s graduates accepted into 4-
21-year colleges or universities;

23-WHEREAS, St. John’s succeeds in preparing young people for a life dedicated to
24-leadership, achievement, and service to the community;

26-WHEREAS, the philanthropic efforts of St. John’s include 25,000 hours of annual
27-student Christian service;

29-WHEREAS, on February 27, 2023, the St. John’s College High School Boys’ Varsity
30-Basketball team, led by Head Coach Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor, defeated Paul
31-VI by a score of 65-63 to win the 2023 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (“WCAC”)
32-championship;

34-WHEREAS, the Ward 4 community is proud of the achievements of the St. John’ s Boys’

56-WHEREAS, the St. John’s College High School Varsity Boys’ Basketball team has
57-triumphed and excelled on the court and in the classroom;

61-WHEREAS, in May 2022, Coach Behan was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral
62-sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that affects
63-muscle control in the body;

65-WHEREAS, ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, gender, or
66-socioeconomic boundaries; and

68-WHEREAS, despite Coach Behan’s diagnosis, he made the courageous decision to
69-remain the head coach and continues to provide inspiration to all.

71-RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
72-resolution may be cited as the “St. John’s College High School Boys ’ Varsity Basketball Team
73-Recognition Resolution of 2023”.

76-Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor for their coaching excellence and the players of the
