A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 
 25-37 
 
IN THE COUNC IL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 
 
March 7, 2023 
 
To recognize and congratulate the Saint John’s College Boys	’ Basketball team for winning the 
Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Boys’ Basketball Championship. 
 
WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, established in 1851 is the second-	oldest 
Christian Brothers school in the United States; 
 
WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, located in northwest Washington, D.C., 
remains a bastion of academic excellence, with 100% of St. John’s graduates accepted into 4- 
year colleges or universities; 
 
WHEREAS, St. John’s succeeds in preparing young people for a life dedicated to 
leadership, achievement, and service to the community; 
 
WHEREAS, the philanthropic efforts of St. John’s include 25,000 hours of annual 
student Christian service; 
 
WHEREAS, on February 27, 2023, the St. John’s College High School Boys’ Varsity 
Basketball team, led by Head Coach Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor, defeated Paul 
VI by a score of 65-63 to win the 2023 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (“WCAC”) 
championship; 
 
WHEREAS, the Ward 4 community is proud of the achievements of the St. John’	s Boys’ 
Basketball team; 
 	WHEREAS, the St. John’s College High School Varsity Boys’ Basketball team roster for 
the 2022- 2023 season includes:

WHEREAS, the St. John’s College High School Varsity Boys’ Basketball team has 
triumphed and excelled on the court and in the classroom; 
 
WHEREAS, Coach Behan was named WCAC Coach of the Year;  
 
WHEREAS, in May 2022, Coach Behan was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral 
sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that affects 
muscle control in the body; 
 
WHEREAS, ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, gender, or 
socioeconomic boundaries; and 
 
WHEREAS, despite Coach Behan’s diagnosis, he made the courageous decision to 
remain the head coach and continues to provide inspiration to all. 
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 
resolution may be cited as the “St. John’s College High School Boys	’ Varsity Basketball Team 
Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 
 
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia heartily congratulates Head Coach 
Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor for their coaching excellence and the players of the 
St. John’s College High School Boys	’ Varsity Basketball Team for their athletic 
accomplishment. 
 
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
