A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNC IL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
May 2, 2023
To recognize, honor, and congratulate the MTHS Firebird Robotics team at McKinley Technology
High School on their first place win at the FIRST Chesapeake regional robotics competition
in Blacksburg, VA.
WHEREAS, McKinley Tech School is located alongside T Street Northeast in Ward 5,
offers NAF Academies in Engineering, Biotechnology, and Information Technology, and is a 2022
National Blue Ribbon School Award Winner;
WHEREAS, the FIRST Chesapeake District Blacksburg, VA Event was held at Blacksburg
High School on March 4- 5, 2023;
WHEREAS, the FIRST Robotics Competition Challenge is recognized as the premier
international high school engineering challenge;
WHEREAS, in this year’s 2023 CHARGED UP
SM
challenge, teams explored the potential
of energy storage to charge up communities, and remote controlled robots created sustainability
links to engage with nearby power stations;
WHEREAS, more than 110 teams in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia
competed in matches to earn spots in the championship;
WHEREAS, the McKinley Robotics team was formed in 2006 and has been awarded the
Judges Award in 2015 and 2020;
WHEREAS, the McKinley Robotics team is led by Director of Engineering Kenneth
Lesley;
WHEREAS, McKinley Tech’s Firebird Robotics Coach Kenneth Lesley was assisted by
dedicated school staff school counselor Fayola Welsh, and coaches Christopher Grimm and Ruben
Stemple;

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “McKinley Tech High School Firebirds Robotics Team Regional
Championship Recognition Resolution of 2023.”
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the McKinley Tech
High School Firebirds Robotics Team for winning the regional FIRST Chesapeake robotics
competition.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
