A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
October 3, 2023
To recognize Dr. Ellen M. Granberg for her inauguration as the 19
th
President of the George
Washington University.
WHEREAS, Dr. Ellen M. Granberg will officially begin her service to the George
Washington University as its 19
th
president on November 3, 2023;
WHEREAS, President Granberg will preside over an institution that has fostered deep ties
to communities within the D.C. metro area that have endured for more than 2 centuries, maintaining good neighbor relations and open dialogue;
WHEREAS, President Granberg pledges to continue GW’s culture of public and
community service throughout all 8 wards of the District, including building upon a record 602,048 hours of community service logged this past year by the GW community;
WHEREAS, President Granberg affirms that the university will continue to prioritize
academic excellence and support scholastic partnerships throughout the District, such as those at School Without Walls, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and MacArthur High School;
WHEREAS, President Granberg has already demonstrated her desire and commitment to
use her institution as a vehicle for social mobility, particularly within the District, and spur the university’s continued growth as a world- class research institution that contributes to the strength
and diversity of economic, cultural, and civic life of the D.C. metropolitan area for years to
come.
RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution be cited as the “George Washington University President Dr. Ellen M. Granberg
Inaugural Recognition Resolution of 2023.”
Sec. 2. The Council and District of Columbia welcomes President Granberg and her family
into our community and embraces her desire to contribute to the people and institutions
throughout the D.C. metro area.
