To declare the existence of an emergency with respect to officially redesignating the school in 15
Lot 841 in Square 974 as Shirley Chisholm Elementary School. 16

BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 18
act may be cited as the “Shirley Chisholm Elementary School Redesignation Emergency 19
Declaration Resolution of 2024”. 20
Sec. 2. (a) There exists an immediate need to officially designate the school in Lot 841 in 21
Square 974 as Shirley Chisholm Elementary School. 22
(b) Bill 25-539, the “Shirley Chisholm Elementary School Redesignation Act of 2023” 23
was adopted on final reading by the Council on January 9, 2024. 24
(c) The underlying legislation officially renames John Tyler Elementary School as Shirly 25
Chisholm Elementary School. 26
(d) The school is ready to implement the new name as soon as legislation authorizing the 27
change is approved and has requested this legislation proceed as quickly as possible. Moreover, 28
it is best to establish the new name before the School Year 2024-2025 enrollment process begins. 29
Sec. 3. The Council of the District of Columbia finds that the circumstances enumerated 30
in section 2 constitute emergency circumstances making it necessary that the “Shirley Chisholm 31
Elementary School Redesignation Emergency Act of 2024” be adopted after a single reading. 32
Sec. 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately. 33
