A RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
January 9, 2024
To declare the existence of an emergency with respect to the need to redesignate the school in
Lot 841 in Square 974 as Shirley Chisholm Elementary School.
BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That
this resolution may be cited as the “Shirley Chisholm Elementary School Redesignation
Emergency Declaration Resolution of 2024”.
Sec. 2. (a) There exists an immediate need to designate the school in Lot 841 in Square
974 as Shirley Chisholm Elementary School.
(b) Bill 25-539, the Shirley Chisholm Elementary School Redesignation Act of 2023,
was adopted on final reading by the Council on January 9, 2024.
(c) The underlying legislation renames John Tyler Elementary School as Shirly Chisholm
Elementary School.
(d) The school is ready to implement the new name as soon as legislation authorizing the
change is approved and has requested this legislation proceed as quickly as possible. Moreover,
it is best to establish the new name before the School Year 2024-2025 enrollment process begins.
Sec. 3. The Council finds that the circumstances enumerated in section 2 constitute
emergency circumstances making it necessary that the Shirley Chisholm Elementary School
Redesignation Emergency Act of 2024 be adopted after a single reading.
Sec. 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
