1920 WHEREAS, Mr. Alger officially began his service to American University as its 16

25+ WHEREAS, President Alger presides over an institution with eight schools and colleges, 19
26+over 170 programs, and more than 13,000 students, that has for 132 years fostered the next 20

29+ WHEREAS, President Alger previously served as president of James Madison University 23
30+for 12 years, where throughout his tenure the university advanced academic achievement, a sense 24
31+of community, civic activism by the students and community engagement by the University; 25

34+American Association of Colleges and Universities, chair of the Association of Governing 28
35+Boards’ Council of Presidents, and on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics; 29

44+ IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF 38
45+COLUMBIA, that this resolution may be cited as the “American University President Jonathan 39
46+R. Alger Inaugural Recognition Resolution of 2025”. 40
