A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 
 
26-17 
 
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 
 
March 4, 2025 
 
To recognize Jonathan R. Alger for his inauguration as the 16
th
 President of American 
University.  
 
 WHEREAS, Mr. Alger officially began his service to American University as its 16
th
 
president on July 1, 2024;  
 
 WHEREAS, President Alger preside s over an institution with 8 schools and colleges, 
over 170 programs, and more than 13,000 students, that has for 132 years fostered the next 
generation of change makers;   
 
 WHEREAS, President Alger previously served as president of James Madison University 
for 12 years, where throughout his tenure the university advanced academic achievement, a sense 
of community, civic activism by the students and community engagement by the University;  
 
 WHEREAS, President Alger serves as the chair of the national board of directors for the 
American Association of Colleges and Universities, chair of the Association of Governing Boards’ Council of Presidents, and on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics; 
 
 WHEREAS, President Alger has already demonstrated his desire and commitment to the 
American University community through over 30 listening sessions during the fall semester and 
the launch of The Civic Life initiative ; and 
 WHEREAS, the Council shares the excitement of the American University community as 
it embarks on its next chapter under President Alger’s leadership.   
 
 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 
resolution may be cited as the “American University President Jonathan R. Alger Inaugural 
Recognition Resolution of 2025”	. 
 
 Sec. 2. The Council and District of Columbia welcome President Alger and his family 
and embrace his desire to contribute to American University and the D.C. metro region 
community. 
 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately	.
