1616 WHEREAS, eating disorders affect 28.8 million Americans or 5
1717 9 percent of the United States population, of which 1.8 million 6
1818 are Floridians, and 7
1919 WHEREAS, eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa, 8
2020 bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restr ictive 9
2121 food intake disorder, and other feeding or eating disorders, are 10
2222 complex, biologically based illnesses, and 11
2323 WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the incidence 12
2424 of eating disorder behaviors and diagnoses, and has exacerbated 13
2525 eating disorders in patient populations, often with more severe 14
2626 symptoms and comorbidities, and 15
2727 WHEREAS, eating disorders have no boundaries with respect 16
2828 to gender, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, body shape and 17
2929 weight, ability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, 18

3131 WHEREAS, eating disorders are highly prevalent among 20
3232 servicemembers and veterans of the United States Armed Forces, 21

3434 WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious 23
3535 physical health consequences, including irregular heartbeat, 24

5252 WHEREAS, anorexia nervosa has the second highest mortality 31
5353 rate among all psychiatric illnesses in the United States, and 32
5454 WHEREAS, many organizations are dedicated to outreach, 33
5555 education, support, and early intervention for eating disorders, 34
