House Resolution 1 
A resolution recognizing the week of February 21 -27, 2 
2022, as "Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, eating disorders affect 28.8 million Americans or 5 
9 percent of the United States population, of which 1.8 million 6 
are Floridians, and 7 
 WHEREAS, eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa, 8 
bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restr ictive 9 
food intake disorder, and other feeding or eating disorders, are 10 
complex, biologically based illnesses, and 11 
 WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the incidence 12 
of eating disorder behaviors and diagnoses, and has exacerbated 13 
eating disorders in patient populations, often with more severe 14 
symptoms and comorbidities, and 15 
 WHEREAS, eating disorders have no boundaries with respect 16 
to gender, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, body shape and 17 
weight, ability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, 18 
and 19 
 WHEREAS, eating disorders are highly prevalent among 20 
servicemembers and veterans of the United States Armed Forces, 21 
and 22 
 WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious 23 
physical health consequences, including irregular heartbeat, 24 
heart disease and heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis, 25  

gastric rupture, tooth decay, obesity, gallbladder disease, 26 
diabetes, and death, and 27 
 WHEREAS, at least once every 52 minutes someone in the 28 
United States dies as a direct result of an eating disorde r, 29 
culminating in 10,200 deaths each year, and 30 
 WHEREAS, anorexia nervosa has the second highest mortality 31 
rate among all psychiatric illnesses in the United States, and 32 
 WHEREAS, many organizations are dedicated to outreach, 33 
education, support, and early intervention for eating disorders, 34 
including the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, which is 35 
headquartered in Florida, NOW, THEREFORE, 36 
 37 
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 38 
Florida: 39 
 40 
 That the week of February 21 -27, 2022, is recognized as 41 
"Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Florida and that all 42 
Floridians are encouraged to become better informed about eating 43 
disorders. 44
