14	14	"Holodomor Remembrance Day" in the State of Florida. 3

16	16	WHEREAS, the Ukrainian Famine of 1932 -1933, known as the 5
17	17	"Holodomor," meaning murder by starvation, resulted in the 6
18	18	deaths of between seven and ten million Ukrainians, with a third 7
19	19	of the victims being children under 10 years of age, and 8
20	20	WHEREAS, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and his totalitarian 9
21	21	regime committed an act of genocide through the implementation 10
22	22	of an engineered famine by confiscating land, crops, and 11
23	23	livestock from the Ukrainian people, and 12
24	24	WHEREAS, the Holodomor was specifically designed by the 13
25	25	Soviet regime to force collectivization and punish ind ependent-14
26	26	minded Ukrainians for their resistance to its economic, 15
27	27	political, and social oppression, and 16
28	28	WHEREAS, at the height of the Holodomor in 1933, an 17
29	29	estimated 25,000 Ukrainians died each day as the Soviets 18
30	30	continued to export Ukraine's crops to the rest of the world, 19
31	31	and 20
32	32	WHEREAS, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, 21
33	33	documents created during this time surfaced which detail the 22
34	34	Soviet regime's actions and intent to destroy Ukraine's national 23
35	35	identity by deporting and executing Ukraine's religious , 24
36	36	intellectual, and cultural leaders and prosecuting or executing 25 

47	47	those who spoke publicly of the famine or against the Soviet 26
48	48	authorities, further destabilizing Ukraine's political 27

50	50	WHEREAS, in April 1988, the U.S. Commission on the Ukraine 29
51	51	Famine, chaired by Congressman Daniel A. Mica of Florida, found 30
52	52	that the Holodomor constituted an act of genocide, and 31
53	53	WHEREAS, over 42,000 residents of the state have Ukrainian 32
54	54	ancestry, and 33
55	55	WHEREAS, the Holodomor is remembered by the global 34
56	56	community as a tragic and heinous crime, NOW, THEREFORE, 35
