An act relating to the Rapid DNA Grant Program; 2 
creating s. 943.324, F.S.; creating the Rapid DNA 3 
Grant Program within the Department of Law Enforcement 4 
for county jails or sheriffs' offices; requiring the 5 
department to annually award grant funds to county 6 
jails or sheriffs' offices; providing funding 7 
requirements; authorizing the department to establish 8 
criteria and set specific time periods for the 9 
acceptance of applications and the selection process 10 
for awarding grant funds; providing an effective date. 11 
 12 
Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 13 
 14 
 Section 1.  Section 943.324, Florida Statutes, is created 15 
to read: 16 
 943.324  Rapid DNA Grant Program for county jails or 17 
sheriffs' offices.— 18 
 (1)  There is created within the department the Rapid DNA 19 
Grant Program to award grants to county jails or sheriffs' 20 
offices to support local law enforcement agencies in the 21 
processing and expediting of DNA samples as defined in, and in 22 
support of the statewide DNA database under, s. 943.325. 23 
 (2)  The department shall annually award to county jails or 24 
sheriffs' offices any funds specifically appropriated for the 25

grant program to cover expenses related to the purchasing of DNA 26 
testing machines and other necessary supplies. Grants must be 27 
provided to county jails or sheriffs' offices if funds are 28 
appropriated for that purpose by law. The total amount of grants 29 
awarded may not exceed funding appropriated for the grant 30 
program. 31 
 (3)  The department may establish criteria and set specific 32 
time periods for the acceptance of applications and for the 33 
selection process for awarding grant funds. 34 
 Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2023. 35
