16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, in 1822, the Georgia General Assembly designated a site for a new courthouse2 |

17 | 17 | | in the newly-established DeKalb County, and a year later in 1823, the City of Decatur was3 |

18 | 18 | | incorporated as a municipality, making it one of the oldest in the state; and4 |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, while Atlanta experienced explosive growth, development, and sprawl, as early5 |
---|
20 | 20 | | as 1849, the City of Decatur promoted itself as a quiet and prosperous small town that6 |
---|
21 | 21 | | offered a peaceful, healthful, and beautiful place to live; and7 |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, recognizing the power of storytelling to help shape a shared vision for the future8 |

23 | 23 | | of Decatur, the city partnered with Agnes Scott College, Story Corps, and the Savannah9 |
---|
24 | 24 | | College of Art and Design-Atlanta (SCAD) to collect stories from Decatur community10 |
---|
25 | 25 | | members both past and present to help preserve and document the history of those who are11 |
---|
26 | 26 | | or have been a part of the Decatur community; and12 |

27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, as part of its 200th birthday celebration, the city's residents and businesses are13 |

28 | 28 | | partnering with Trees Atlanta to launch the "200 Trees Project" to plant 200 trees around the14 |

35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, the city is known for its places of worship, friendly neighbors, tree-lined streets,18 |

37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Decatur is a melting pot with diverse neighborhoods; and20 |

38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, it is time to celebrate the 200th year of the great City of Decatur.21 |

39 | 39 | | NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that22 |
