23 LC 112 1726 House Resolution 39EX By: Representatives Drenner of the 85 th , Evans of the 89 th , Oliver of the 82 nd , and Crawford of the 84 th A RESOLUTION Commending and celebrating the City of Decatur on its bicentennial; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, in 1822, the Georgia General Assembly designated a site for a new courthouse2 in the newly-established DeKalb County, and a year later in 1823, the City of Decatur was3 incorporated as a municipality, making it one of the oldest in the state; and4 WHEREAS, while Atlanta experienced explosive growth, development, and sprawl, as early5 as 1849, the City of Decatur promoted itself as a quiet and prosperous small town that6 offered a peaceful, healthful, and beautiful place to live; and7 WHEREAS, recognizing the power of storytelling to help shape a shared vision for the future8 of Decatur, the city partnered with Agnes Scott College, Story Corps, and the Savannah9 College of Art and Design-Atlanta (SCAD) to collect stories from Decatur community10 members both past and present to help preserve and document the history of those who are11 or have been a part of the Decatur community; and12 WHEREAS, as part of its 200th birthday celebration, the city's residents and businesses are13 partnering with Trees Atlanta to launch the "200 Trees Project" to plant 200 trees around the14 city; and15 H. R. 39EX - 1 - 23 LC 112 1726 WHEREAS, as the DeKalb County seat, the town's rich heritage, significant landmarks, 16 historic neighborhoods, and cemetery showcase Decatur's two centuries of history; and17 WHEREAS, the city is known for its places of worship, friendly neighbors, tree-lined streets,18 great schools, parks and playing fields, libraries, colleges, and thriving businesses; and19 WHEREAS, Decatur is a melting pot with diverse neighborhoods; and20 WHEREAS, it is time to celebrate the 200th year of the great City of Decatur.21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that22 the members of this body commend and celebrate the City of Decatur, Georgia, upon the23 grand occasion of its bicentennial.24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized25 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the26 public and the press.27 H.
