B. 133 - 1 - House Bill 133 By: Representatives Marin of the 96 th , Park of the 107 th , Tran of the 80 th , Au of the 50 th , Hong of the 103 rd , and others A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT To amend Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to 1 holidays and observances, so as to provide that November 22 shall be designated "Kimchi2 Day" in Georgia; to provide for legislative findings; to provide for related matters; to repeal3 conflicting laws; and for other purposes.4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:5 SECTION 1.6 The General Assembly finds that:7 (1) Korea is the country of origin of kimchi;8 (2) In 2013, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization9 officially recognized Korea's traditional process of preparation and preservation of kimchi10 known as "kimjang" as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage item";11 (3) Kimchi is an excellent source of probiotics, folate, beta-carotene, choline, potassium,12 calcium, and vitamins A, C, and K. Many of these nutrients can contribute to lower rates13 of stroke, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, and to increased immunity;14 (4) There has been a 222 percent increase in food products launched between 201415 and 2018 with "Korea" or "Korean" in the product name. Korean cuisine has grown on16 23 LC 51 0251 H. B. 133 - 2 - food menus in the United States since 2014, which can be attributed to the fact that 17 Korean cuisine has been adopted in American and Mexican cuisine as kimchi is used as18 an alternative to slaws, pickles, and sauerkraut; and19 (5) In South Korea, November 22 is celebrated annually as "Kimchi Day."20 SECTION 2.21 Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to holidays and22 observances, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:23 "1-4-26. 24 November 22 of each year is designated as 'Kimchi Day' in Georgia."25 SECTION 3.26 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.27
