24 LC 39 4268 House Resolution 1228 By: Representatives Corbett of the 174 th , Cannon of the 172 nd , Bonner of the 73 rd , Gladney of the 130 th , and Hitchens of the 161 st A RESOLUTION Honoring the life of Corporal Dewey E. Rewis, Jr., and dedicating a bridge in his memory; 1 and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, our nation's security continues to rely on patriotic men and women who put3 their personal lives on hold in order to place themselves in harm's way to protect the4 freedoms that all United States citizens cherish; and5 WHEREAS, Corporal Dewey E. Rewis, Jr., was a guardian of this nation's freedom and6 liberty with the United States Army, serving in the Korean War; and7 WHEREAS, Corporal Rewis was reported missing in action on December 2, 1950, after his8 unit came under attack during an advance along the eastern banks of the Chosin Reservoir9 in North Korea; and10 WHEREAS, it was reported that Corporal Rewis was held as a prisoner of war and died in11 an area called the Death Valley, which served as a collection point for United Nations12 prisoners, but his remains were not returned home to his family and accounted for until13 October 25, 2022; and14 H. R. 1228 - 1 - 24 LC 39 4268 WHEREAS, Corporal Rewis demonstrated selfless service to this nation and his unyielding 15 commitment to protecting the people and ideals of the United States in giving the ultimate16 sacrifice will be remembered always; and17 WHEREAS, he embodied the spirit of service, willing to find meaning in something greater18 than himself and it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished19 Georgian be recognized appropriately by dedicating a bridge in his memory.20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL21 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the bridge on State Route 52 over the Alapaha River in22 Echols County is dedicated as the US Army Cpl. Dewey E. Rewis Jr. Memorial Bridge.23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and24 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the US Army Cpl. Dewey E.25 Rewis Jr. Memorial Bridge.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized27 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the28 family of Corporal Dewey E.
