A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Dr. Crawford Lewis; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens2
with the passing of Dr. Crawford Lewis on January 28, 2023; and3
WHEREAS, Dr. Crawford Lewis dedicated innumerable hours of his time and energy to the4
well-being of the youth of DeKalb County, Georgia, during his 33 years of service to the5
DeKalb County School District; and6
WHEREAS, beginning in 1997 as a physical education teacher, he rose to his final role as7
superintendent as a result of his own hard work and determination, overseeing 137 schools8
and centers that serve more than 100,000 students; and9
WHEREAS, a visionary who was recognized for his leadership and commitment to10
education, Dr. Crawford Lewis was honored nationally and locally through numerous11
awards, including the DeKalb Schools Principal of the Year award, the Milken Foundation’s12
National Education Award, the NAACP Education Award, and more; and13 23 LC 112 1281

WHEREAS, he further served his community as part of various organizations, such as the
14
DeKalb, Metro Atlanta, and Georgia chambers of commerce; the DeKalb Rotary Club; and15
the 100 Black Men of DeKalb County; and16
WHEREAS, he was united in love and marriage to his wife, Sandra, and was blessed with17
two remarkable children, Denise and Matthew; and18
WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern19
for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his20
family and friends were admired by others; and21
WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation22
for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example he made of his life, he23
made this world a better place in which to live; and24
WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Dr. Crawford Lewis will long be25
remembered for his love of family, friendship, and community and will be missed by all who26
had the great fortune of knowing him.27
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28
the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Dr. Crawford Lewis and29
express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.30
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the32
family of Dr. Crawford Lewis.33
