A RESOLUTION
Recognizing February 27, 2023, as Dominican Republic Independence Day; and for other

purposes.2
WHEREAS, first observed in 144, this year's Dominican Republic Independence Day will3
celebrate 179 years since the Dominican Republic succeeded in its fight against Haitian rule4
and secured its freedom; and5
WHEREAS, as of 2023, there are approximately 90,000 Dominican Americans residing in6
the State of Georgia as well as 518 registered businesses owned by Dominican Americans;7
and8
WHEREAS, Dominican Americans work and serve in many professions and roles across the9
state, including as realtors, artists, doctors, nurses, and students at prestigious institutions10
such as the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and many others; and11
WHEREAS, Dominican Americans are further represented in the National Baseball League12
by numerous professional teams, including the Atlanta Braves; and13 23 LC 112 1428

WHEREAS, in recognition of the many wonderful contributions made to this state by its

Dominican American community, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this day be15
appropriately honored.16
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that17
the members of this body recognize February 27, 2023, as Dominican Republic18
Independence Day.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized20
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the21
public and the press.22
