24 LC 112 2532 Senate Resolution 853 By: Senators Rahman of the 5th and Jones II of the 22nd A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending the Country of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Association 1 of Georgia; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Bangladesh declared its independence on March 26, 1971, was recognized by3 the United States on April 4, 1972, and this year celebrates 52 years of diplomatic relations;4 and5 WHEREAS, the Bangladesh Association of Georgia was established on November 25, 1990,6 the date that the first constitution was introduced and approved by the Board of the Executive7 Committee members, with a vision to unite and empower Bangladeshi-Americans in8 Georgia; and9 WHEREAS, the mission of the Bangladesh Association of Georgia is to celebrate, educate,10 and elevate. Through a variety of cultural events, educational programs, and community11 initiatives, the association strives to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of12 Bangladeshi heritage; and13 S. R. 853 - 1 - 24 LC 112 2532 WHEREAS, during the past 52 years, the United States and Bangladesh have remained 14 closely engaged on a range of issues, including trade, economy, security, governance15 development, and many other global issues; and16 WHEREAS, the ties between the United States and Bangladesh go beyond the17 government-to-government level as people-to-people contacts and commercial relationships18 are increasing over the years, and both countries are willing to see this relationship grow in19 depth and dimension over the next 52 years; and20 WHEREAS, Bangladesh and the United States share similar views on many international21 issues, including maintaining international peace, security, and stability; the fight against22 terrorism and violent extremism; human rights; the 2030 agenda for sustainable23 development; climate change; and many more; and24 WHEREAS, Bangladesh always remembers and recognizes the contributions of the25 American people and their senators and representatives, particularly Senator Ted Kennedy,26 who supported Bangladesh during the war of liberation in 1971; and27 WHEREAS, Bangladesh has made significant socioeconomic progress in the last 52 years,28 including increased food production, disaster resilience, poverty alleviation, improved health29 and education, and women's empowerment; and30 WHEREAS, for more than a decade, Bangladesh has remained one of the fastest growing31 economies in the world, and its economic growth is not only benefitting its own people but32 is also contributing to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the region; and33 S. R. 853 - 2 - 24 LC 112 2532 WHEREAS, the United States has been a long-standing partner of Bangladesh in this 34 successful journey of economic and social development and the two-way trade volume35 between the two countries has recently surpassed $9 billion.36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body37 recognize and commend the Country of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Association of38 Georgia for their advocacy, outreach, and encouragement of the new generation of39 Bangladeshi-Americans to explore Bangladeshi culture and heritage as well as to build40 bridges with other cultures.41 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed42 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the43 press.44 S.
