| 22 | 22 | | matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.5 |

| 25 | 25 | | Code Section 20-2-212 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to salary8 |

| 26 | 26 | | schedules for professionals in elementary and secondary education, is amended by revising9 |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | subsection (c) and by adding a new subsection to read as follows:10 |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | "(c) A local unit of administration shall pay beginning classroom teachers the first salary11 |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | payment for the number of days worked at the end of the first month of the school year in12 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | which service is rendered.13 |

| 32 | 32 | | The State Board of Education shall develop rules and procedures for implementing this14 |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | subsection by July 1, 2001 2025. Such rules and procedures shall provide for, at a15 |
|---|

| 39 | 39 | | (2) That each update provided for in paragraph (1) of this subsection shall reflect the19 |

| 40 | 40 | | effect of annual inflation or deflation for the immediately preceding calendar year in20 |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | accordance with rules and regulations adopted by the State Board of Education, which21 |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | rules and regulations may use for this purpose the Consumer Price Index as reported by22 |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor or any other23 |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | similar index established by the federal government, if the State Board of Education24 |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | determines that such federal index reflects the effect of inflation and deflation on25 |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | certificated professional personnel."26 |
