88 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 603
99 to 80 percent of dementia cases; and4
1010 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging; it is a progressive brain5
1111 disease that gets worse over time and is the seventh leading cause of death in Georgia; and6
1212 WHEREAS, more than 188,000 Georgians over age 65 are living with Alzheimer's disease7
1313 and 374,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease and have accumulated8
1414 approximately 755 million hours of unpaid care, valued at $11.4 billion; and9
1515 WHEREAS, an increasing number of individuals are developing younger-onset Alzheimer's10
1616 disease, a form of the disease that occurs prior to age 65, which can be particularly difficult11
1717 on family dynamics and economics due to the early occurrence of the disease; and12
1818 WHEREAS, because Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are accompanied by memory13
1919 loss, changes in personality and behavior, and a tendency to wander, individuals with this14

2222 disease are at an increased risk for accidental injury, getting lost or disoriented, and being

2424 abused, neglected, and exploited; and16
2525 WHEREAS, caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias17
2626 experience a significant toll on their physical, mental, and financial health and often report18
2727 high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and health problems; and19
2828 WHEREAS, there is an economic impact of Alzheimer's disease upon the business, medical,20
2929 and caregiver communities of Georgia; and21
3030 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this day be committed to increasing22
3131 awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias to address the needs of this growing23
3232 segment of Georgia's population.24
3333 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body25
3434 recognize February 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol.26
3535 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed27
3636 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the28
3737 press.29
