25 LC 112 2890 Senate Resolution 130 By: Senators Strickland of the 42nd and Esteves of the 35th A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol; and for 1 other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 603 to 80 percent of dementia cases; and4 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging; it is a progressive brain5 disease that gets worse over time and is the seventh leading cause of death in Georgia; and6 WHEREAS, more than 188,000 Georgians over age 65 are living with Alzheimer's disease7 and 374,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease and have accumulated8 approximately 755 million hours of unpaid care, valued at $11.4 billion; and9 WHEREAS, an increasing number of individuals are developing younger-onset Alzheimer's10 disease, a form of the disease that occurs prior to age 65, which can be particularly difficult11 on family dynamics and economics due to the early occurrence of the disease; and12 WHEREAS, because Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are accompanied by memory13 loss, changes in personality and behavior, and a tendency to wander, individuals with this14 S. R. 130 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2890 disease are at an increased risk for accidental injury, getting lost or disoriented, and being 15 abused, neglected, and exploited; and16 WHEREAS, caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias17 experience a significant toll on their physical, mental, and financial health and often report18 high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and health problems; and19 WHEREAS, there is an economic impact of Alzheimer's disease upon the business, medical,20 and caregiver communities of Georgia; and21 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this day be committed to increasing22 awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias to address the needs of this growing23 segment of Georgia's population.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body25 recognize February 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed27 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the28 press.29 S.
