25 LC 112 2903 Senate Resolution 138 By: Senators Hickman of the 4th, Gooch of the 51st, Hatchett of the 50th, Albers of the 56th and Harbin of the 16th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Georgia Reads Coach Malcolm Mitchell; and for other 1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, literacy skills are necessary for life and work; improving literacy in all age3 groups is a moral imperative and necessary for Georgia's workforce and thriving economy;4 and5 WHEREAS, in 2023, the General Assembly recognized the importance of literacy with the6 passage of two bills: SB 211, which created the Georgia Council on Literacy, and HB 538,7 which required comprehensive education reforms for reading instruction in the science of8 reading; and9 WHEREAS, the Georgia Council on Literacy and its 30 members began work on July 1,10 2023, monitoring the implementation of the Early Literacy Act, reviewing literacy data11 among various populations, and creating Georgia's 2030 State Literacy Plan with the goal12 of becoming the state with the greatest literacy gains in the country and ensuring that every13 child is a reader, every teacher is prepared, and every community is supported; and14 S. R. 138 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2903 WHEREAS, Malcolm Mitchell, Super Bowl champion, author, and speaker, was named the 15 Georgia Reads Coach by the Georgia Council on Literacy and was tasked by the council to16 help Georgia reach its goal of all citizens possessing the literacy skills essential for both17 workforce and daily life; and18 WHEREAS, founder of the Share the Magic Foundation and player for both the University19 of Georgia Bulldogs and New England Patriots, Malcolm has demonstrated his energy,20 dedication, and commitment to inspiring kids to read; and21 WHEREAS, through in-school programs, virtual challenges, and community partner22 programs, the Share the Magic Foundation has reached students not only in Atlanta and23 across Georgia but also in all 50 states and in 17 countries; and24 WHEREAS, Malcolm's ability to connect with young students makes his Read with Malcolm25 programs effective in motivating children to read, parents to serve as role models, and26 communities to join in turning around the state's literacy challenges and turning the page to27 a brighter future for all Georgians.28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body29 recognize and commend Georgia Reads Coach Malcolm Mitchell for his important work in30 using literacy to empower individuals to find successful careers, keep healthy, and contribute31 to their family and community.32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed33 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Georgia Reads34 Coach Malcolm Mitchell.35 S.
