25 LC 112 2709 Senate Resolution 36 By: Senators Halpern of the 39th, Goodman of the 8th, Jones II of the 22nd, Rhett of the 33rd, Orrock of the 36th and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing January 27, 2025, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the State of 1 Georgia and reaffirming the commitment to combat antisemitism; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, January 27, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of3 Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest and most notorious Nazi concentration and extermination4 camp, where approximately 1.1 million men, women, and children were systematically5 murdered; and6 WHEREAS, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion to honor the7 six million Jews and millions of other innocent victims who perished during the Holocaust,8 while also serving as a reminder of the enduring need to confront hatred, bigotry, and9 antisemitism; and10 WHEREAS, antisemitism is on the rise globally, including in the State of Georgia, where11 Jewish communities have faced growing incidents of hate and discrimination; and12 WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, the Jewish people endured the deadliest attack against them13 since the Holocaust by the terrorist organization Hamas while peacefully living in their14 S. R. 36 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2709 homeland, the State of Israel, underscoring the persistent and dangerous threat of 15 antisemitism worldwide; and16 WHEREAS, the Georgia General Assembly took a critical step in combating antisemitism17 by passing House Bill 30 during the previous legislative session, formally adopting the18 International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism into19 Georgia law; and20 WHEREAS, despite this progress, it is imperative that Georgia lawmakers remain vigilant21 and proactive in addressing antisemitism in our schools, communities, and public institutions,22 ensuring that hate and intolerance have no place in this state; and23 WHEREAS, the observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day is not only a time 24 for reflection but also a call to action to combat contemporary forms of antisemitism and25 safeguard the rights and dignity of all people.26 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body27 recognize January 27, 2025, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Georgia, honor28 the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, condemn all forms of antisemitism and hate, and29 reaffirm the commitment to fostering a state that stands firmly against prejudice and30 discrimination.31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed32 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the33 press.34 S.
