A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Angela Laverne Stone; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens2
with the passing of Angela Laverne Stone on March 1, 2025; and3
WHEREAS, Angela Laverne Stone was born on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South4
Carolina, and from an early age, she displayed a deep passion for music, beginning her5
journey as a Gospel singer at First Nazareth Baptist Church; and6
WHEREAS, she was a pioneering force in the music industry, rising to prominence in the7
late 1970s as a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence and later achieving critical and8
commercial success as a solo artist with multiple gold-certified albums and chart-topping9
singles; and10
WHEREAS, throughout her illustrious career, she contributed significantly to the evolution11
of R&B and neo-soul, earning three Grammy Award nominations, two Soul Train Lady of12
Soul Awards, and the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors; and13

WHEREAS, in addition to her remarkable music career, she performed as an actress in
14
numerous films, television series, and stage productions, making her film debut in the 200215
comedy film The Hot Chick and her stage debut in 2003 in the role of Big Mama Morton in16
the Broadway musical Chicago; and17
WHEREAS, Angela Laverne Stone was a woman of profound artistic talent and boundless18
generosity, inspiring generations with her music, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to19
her craft; and20
WHEREAS, a compassionate and gifted individual, Angela Laverne Stone will long be21
remembered for her groundbreaking contributions to music and entertainment and will be22
deeply missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.23
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body24
join in honoring the life and memory of Angela Laverne Stone and express their deepest and25
most sincere regret at her passing.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed27
to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the family of28
Angela Laverne Stone.29
