1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, A Christmas Story is a 1983 Christmas comedy film
3 directed by Bob Clark and based on Chicago-born Jean
4 Shepherd's semi-fictional anecdotes in his 1966 book In God We
5 Trust: All Others Pay Cash, with some elements from his 1971
6 book Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories And Other
7 Disasters; and
8 WHEREAS, A Christmas Story was released on November 18,
9 1983; initially overlooked, its critical reputation has grown
10 considerably over the years, and it is regarded by some as one
11 of the best films of 1983; and
12 WHEREAS, Author Jean Shepherd was born in 1921 on the
13 south side of Chicago; he briefly lived in East Chicago,
14 Indiana and was raised in Hammond, Indiana; he set A Christmas
15 Story in Hohman, Indiana, a fictionalized version of his
16 hometown of Hammond; and
17 WHEREAS, A Christmas Story has been shown in a marathon
18 annually on TNT since 1997 and on TBS since 2004 titled "24
19 Hours of A Christmas Story", consisting of 12 consecutive
20 airings of the film from the evening of Christmas Eve to the
21 evening of Christmas Day; and

1 WHEREAS, A Christmas Story is often ranked as one of the
2 best Christmas films; in 2012, it was selected for
3 preservation in the United States National Film Registry by
4 the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically,
5 or aesthetically significant"; and
6 WHEREAS, Yano Anaya, who played Grover Dill, Emmanuel
7 Soba, co-creator of A Christmas Story Family, and Paul A.
8 Bachmann, business partner, helped create the online
9 community, A Christmas Story Family, designed to connect fans
10 with the cast members; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13 we declare November 18, 2023 as "A Christmas Story Family Day"
14 in the State of Illinois; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
16 presented to Yano Anaya, Emmanuel Soba, and Paul A. Bachmann
17 as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
