44 2 WHEREAS, Ninety-four duly elected county coroners, seven
55 3 duly elected county sheriff-coroners, and one duly appointed
66 4 county medical examiner, along with their respective staff
77 5 members, provide medicolegal death investigation services to
88 6 the people of the State of Illinois and visitors to our state;
99 7 and
1010 8 WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
1111 9 professionals are essential to the criminal justice system,
1212 10 public safety, and the public health of the State of Illinois;
1313 11 and
1414 12 WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
1515 13 professionals diligently perform their duties making inquiry
1616 14 into the manner and cause of an individual's death under
1717 15 physically and emotionally demanding conditions, including,
1818 16 but not limited to, the deaths of children, the current opiate
1919 17 epidemic, the recent COVID-19 pandemic, victims of violence at
2020 18 the hands of another, and a never-ending litany of deaths that
2121 19 occur under harsh, unexpected, and other tragic circumstances;

2323 21 WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
2424 22 professionals serve as an advocate for the deceased, give

3333 1 voices to those who have been forever stilled, and strive to
3434 2 seek answers to extremely difficult questions, serving the
3535 3 needs of the survivors left behind and the good of the public
3636 4 welfare; and
3737 5 WHEREAS, These medicolegal death investigation
3838 6 professionals pursue further training and education through
3939 7 the Illinois Coroner Training Board, the Illinois Coroners and
4040 8 Medical Examiners Association, the International Association
4141 9 of Coroners and Medical Examiners, the American Board of
4242 10 Medicolegal Death Investigators, the National Association of
4343 11 Medical Examiners, and a host of other related organizations
4444 12 to continue their professional development as skilled,
4545 13 qualified, ethical, and knowledgeable investigators, fiercely
4646 14 loyal to the mission they serve that so often goes without
4747 15 recognition or accolade; therefore, be it
4848 16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4949 17 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5050 18 we declare the week of January 21 through January 27, 2024 as
5151 19 Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week in honor of
5252 20 the coroners, deputy coroners, medical examiners, support and
5353 21 ancillary staff, forensic pathologists, and medicolegal death
5454 22 investigators for their ongoing commitment of service to the
5555 23 citizens of Illinois and their communities; and be it further
