44 2 WHEREAS, On December 28, 1970, President Richard Nixon
55 3 signed into law the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA),
66 4 which went into effect on April 28, 1971; and
77 5 WHEREAS, In Illinois, 177 people were killed due to fatal
88 6 work injuries in 2022 according to the most recent report from
99 7 the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; and
1010 8 WHEREAS, All employers, private and public, should be
1111 9 dedicated to improving workplace safety, seeking stronger
1212 10 health standard enforcement, and treating workers with dignity
1313 11 as constant improvements in worker safety are pursued; and
1414 12 WHEREAS, Since 1989, workers and local government leaders
1515 13 have gathered on April 28th to commemorate Workers Memorial
1616 14 Day in honor of those who have lost their lives working to
1717 15 provide a good standard of living for their families and
1818 16 communities; and
1919 17 WHEREAS, Americans can honor our workers by observing
2020 18 Workers Memorial Day, remembering those victims of workplace
2121 19 injuries and workplace-related disease, and rededicating
2222 20 ourselves to improving safety and health in every American
