1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Department of Transportation Law of the
5 Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding
6 Section 2705-625 as follows:
7 (20 ILCS 2705/2705-625 new)
8 Sec. 2705-625. Safety improvements to State roads for
9 pedestrians and cyclists. The Department shall develop a
10 policy which ensures the safety of pedestrians and cyclists on
11 roadways within this State. The policy shall provide that
12 improvements will be made during routine maintenance and
13 within a distance of 500 feet of the maintenance work to any
14 State roads within a municipality to include, but not be
15 limited to, high visibility signage, crosswalk improvements,
16 curb bump outs, barrier protected bike lanes, and bus
17 shelters.
18 Beginning January 1, 2024, the Department shall provide a
19 semi-annual report to the General Assembly on pedestrian and
20 bicycle safety improvements on non-highway State routes that
21 have been initiated, are in progress, or are recently
22 completed. The Department shall provide the reports every June
23 30th and January 1st thereafter.
