1313 1 AN ACT concerning education.
1414 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1515 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1616 4 Section 5. The Care of Students with Diabetes Act is
1717 5 amended by changing Section 27 as follows:
1818 6 (105 ILCS 145/27)
1919 7 Sec. 27. Undesignated glucagon. A school may maintain a
2020 8 supply of glucagon in any secure location that is immediately
2121 9 accessible to a school nurse or a delegated care aide;
2222 10 however, a school shall maintain a supply of glucagon in any
2323 11 secure location that is immediately accessible to a school
2424 12 nurse or a delegated care aide if a student diagnosed with
2525 13 diabetes attends the school. Schools shall obtain a
2626 14 prescription for glucagon, even if the school is not required
2727 15 to maintain the glucagon. A physician, a physician assistant
2828 16 who has prescriptive authority under Section 7.5 of the
2929 17 Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987, or an advanced
3030 18 practice registered nurse who has prescriptive authority under
3131 19 Section 65-40 of the Nurse Practice Act may prescribe
3232 20 undesignated glucagon in the name of the school to be
3333 21 maintained for use when necessary. Any supply of undesignated
3434 22 glucagon must be maintained in accordance with the
3535 23 manufacturer's instructions. A school nurse or delegated care

7676 1 aide may administer undesignated glucagon if he or she is
7777 2 authorized to administer the undesignated glucagon through a
7878 3 student's diabetes care plan and if the student's prescribed
7979 4 glucagon is not available on-site or has expired. Immediately
8080 5 after the administration of undesignated glucagon, a school
8181 6 must notify the school nurse, unless the school nurse was the
8282 7 one administering the undesignated glucagon, and the student's
8383 8 parent or guardian or emergency contact, if known, and health
8484 9 care provider of its use.
