33 1 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
44 2 WHEREAS, It is fitting to honor those who have given their
55 3 lives in service to their community; and
66 4 WHEREAS, From a young age, Officer Brian Pierce Jr. looked
77 5 to serve his community, including with the Raymond/Harvel Fire
88 6 Explorer program, the ISP Junior Police Academy, the Christian
99 7 County Drug and Alcohol Task Force, and the Elkville Fire
1010 8 Department; and
1111 9 WHEREAS, After graduating from Elkville High School,
1212 10 Officer Pierce became the trainer and treasurer of the
1313 11 Elkville Fire Department as well as a correctional officer
1414 12 with the Menard Correctional Facility; and
1515 13 WHEREAS, In 2017, Officer Pierce moved to Makanda, where
1616 14 he joined the Makanda Township Fire Department; while there,
1717 15 he spent every Monday night training younger firefighters; and
1818 16 WHEREAS, In 2019, Officer Pierce assisted the mayor of
1919 17 Spillertown in constructing a police department that had not
2020 18 existed for ten years, which included assisting in applying
2121 19 for funding and grants and helping with day to day operations;

3131 1 WHEREAS, Officer Pierce became a police officer in
3232 2 Brooklyn and was killed in the line of duty on August 4, 2021
3333 3 while deploying stop sticks to halt a vehicle fleeing police;
3434 4 and
3535 5 WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Officer Pierce was
3636 6 survived by his parents, a sister, and a niece and nephew;
3737 7 therefore, be it
3838 8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
3939 9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
4040 10 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the
4141 11 section of Illinois Route 37 from Longstreet Road to
4242 12 Prosperity Road as it passes Spillertown as the "Officer Brian
4343 13 Pierce Jr. Memorial Highway"; and be it further
4444 14 RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
4545 15 is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
4646 16 State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
4747 17 giving notice of the name "Officer Brian Pierce Jr. Memorial
4848 18 Highway"; and be it further
4949 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5050 20 presented to the family of Officer Pierce and the Secretary of
5151 21 Transportation.
