44 2 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to promoting
55 3 sustainable practices, reducing plastic waste, and preserving
66 4 the environment for present and future generations; and
77 5 WHEREAS, Plastic is made from toxic fossil fuels that
88 6 never decompose, harming people, wildlife, and the
99 7 environment; and
1010 8 WHEREAS, More than 280 million tons of short-lived plastic
1111 9 products become waste every year; and
1212 10 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the importance
1313 11 of proactive measures to address this issue; and
1414 12 WHEREAS, It is estimated that restaurants have saved an
1515 13 average of $5,000 per year by adopting
1616 14 accessories-upon-request policies; and
1717 15 WHEREAS, The Skip the Plastic Campaign, created by
1818 16 Nicolina Pappas of Nicolina's Turtle Co. and in partnership
1919 17 with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative and the
2020 18 Bi-State Conservation Action Network, aims to reduce the
2121 19 unnecessary use of single-use plastic by promoting the
2222 20 practice of providing such items only upon customer request;

3232 2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3333 3 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3434 4 we declare April 1, 2025 as Skip the Plastic Day in Illinois;
3535 5 and be it further
3636 6 RESOLVED, That we urge all residents, businesses, and
3737 7 visitors to reduce plastic waste and protect our environment;
3838 8 and be it further
3939 9 RESOLVED, That we commend all businesses that willingly
4040 10 participate in Skip the Plastic Day by only offering
4141 11 single-use plastic items, including straws and cutlery, by
4242 12 request and that take proactive steps toward reducing plastic
4343 13 waste; and be it further
