1  HOUSE RESOLUTION
2  WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to promoting
3  sustainable practices, reducing plastic waste, and preserving
4  the environment for present and future generations; and
5  WHEREAS, Plastic is made from toxic fossil fuels that
6  never decompose, harming people, wildlife, and the
7  environment; and
8  WHEREAS, More than 280 million tons of short-lived plastic
9  products become waste every year; and
10  WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the importance
11  of proactive measures to address this issue; and
12  WHEREAS, It is estimated that restaurants have saved an
13  average of $5,000 per year by adopting
14  accessories-upon-request policies; and
15  WHEREAS, The Skip the Plastic Campaign, created by
16  Nicolina Pappas of Nicolina's Turtle Co. and in partnership
17  with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative and the
18  Bi-State Conservation Action Network, aims to reduce the
19  unnecessary use of single-use plastic by promoting the
20  practice of providing such items only upon customer request;

1  therefore, be it
2  RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3  HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4  we declare April 1, 2025 as Skip the Plastic Day in Illinois;
5  and be it further
6  RESOLVED, That we urge all residents, businesses, and
7  visitors to reduce plastic waste and protect our environment;
8  and be it further
9  RESOLVED, That we commend all businesses that willingly
10  participate in Skip the Plastic Day by only offering
11  single-use plastic items, including straws and cutlery, by
12  request and that take proactive steps toward reducing plastic
13  waste; and be it further
