12	12	1 AN ACT concerning safety.
13	13	2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
14	14	3 represented in the General Assembly:
15	15	4 Section 5. The Smoke Detector Act is amended by changing
16	16	5 Section 4 and by adding Section 3.1 as follows:
17	17	6 (425 ILCS 60/3.1 new)
18	18	7 Sec. 3.1. Non-approved smoke detectors banned. It is
19	19	8 unlawful for any person to sell, offer for sale, or give as a
20	20	9 gift any smoke detector that is not designed to receive
21	21	10 primary power from the building wiring or does not meet the
22	22	11 battery requirements of subsection (e) of Section 3 of this
23	23	12 Act.

25	25	14 Sec. 4. (a) Except as provided in subsection (c), willful
26	26	15 failure to install or maintain in operating condition any
27	27	16 smoke detector required by this Act shall be a Class B
28	28	17 misdemeanor.
29	29	18 (b) Except as provided in subsection (c), tampering with,
30	30	19 removing, destroying, disconnecting or removing the batteries
31	31	20 from any installed smoke detector, except in the course of
32	32	21 inspection, maintenance or replacement of the detector, shall
