44 2 WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly recognizes the
55 3 importance of Route 66 as a cultural and historical asset and
66 4 wishes to honor its centennial milestone and to celebrate its
77 5 impact on transportation, tourism, and the American spirit;

99 7 WHEREAS, Route 66, known as the "Main Street of America"
1010 8 or as the "Mother Road", has played a significant role in the
1111 9 history and development of the United States, connecting
1212 10 Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California and serving as
1313 11 a vital transportation corridor since its establishment in
1414 12 1926; and
1515 13 WHEREAS, The year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of
1616 14 Route 66, a roadway that has become an enduring symbol of
1717 15 adventure, freedom, and economic opportunity and that has
1818 16 contributed to the culture and identity of Illinois and the
1919 17 nation as a whole; and
2020 18 WHEREAS, Illinois holds a unique place in the history of
2121 19 Route 66 as it was the first state to pave the highway in its
2222 20 entirety and serves as the starting point of this legendary
2323 21 route in downtown Chicago; Route 66 passes through numerous
2424 22 communities and landscapes that have left a lasting imprint on

3434 2 WHEREAS, Route 66 in Illinois has supported small
3535 3 businesses, diners, motels, and roadside attractions,
3636 4 fostering economic growth and tourism while preserving the
3737 5 rich history of the communities along its path from Chicago to
3838 6 the Mississippi River; and
3939 7 WHEREAS, During the Prohibition era, Route 66 was often
4040 8 used as a corridor for transporting illicit goods, and during
4141 9 the Great Depression, it became a critical path for displaced
4242 10 families seeking new opportunities in the West; and
4343 11 WHEREAS, Route 66 has been immortalized in American
4444 12 culture through various works of art, including literature,
4545 13 film, and music such as John Steinbeck's novel "The Grapes of
4646 14 Wrath", the popular song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", and
4747 15 numerous Hollywood films that have celebrated its legacy; and
4848 16 WHEREAS, The preservation and commemoration of Route 66's
4949 17 legacy have been championed by local organizations,
5050 18 historians, and enthusiasts who continue to promote awareness
5151 19 and appreciation of its historical significance; therefore, be
