7 | 7 | | 5 and other occupied buildings for radon; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | 6 WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas |
---|
9 | 9 | | 7 that may threaten the health of Illinois citizens and their |
---|
10 | 10 | | 8 families; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | 9 WHEREAS, Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer |
---|
12 | 12 | | 10 in the U.S., and it is the leading cause of lung cancer in |
---|
13 | 13 | | 11 non-smokers; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | 12 WHEREAS, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency |
---|
15 | 15 | | 13 estimates that radon is responsible for approximately 21,000 |
---|
16 | 16 | | 14 lung cancer deaths each year; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | 15 WHEREAS, In Illinois, 41% of homes, and an even higher |
---|
18 | 18 | | 16 percentage of schools and commercial buildings, have high |
---|
19 | 19 | | 17 radon levels; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | 18 WHEREAS, Any building in Illinois may have elevated levels |
---|
21 | 21 | | 19 of radon, even if neighboring buildings do not, and elevated |
---|
22 | 22 | | 20 levels pose a serious health threat to Illinois citizens; and |
