1  SENATE RESOLUTION
2  WHEREAS, January is Radon Action Month, and it is
3  imperative for all Illinois citizens and property owners to
4  test their homes, schools, apartments, healthcare facilities,
5  and other occupied buildings for radon; and
6  WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas
7  that may threaten the health of Illinois citizens and their
8  families; and
9  WHEREAS, Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer
10  in the U.S., and it is the leading cause of lung cancer in
11  non-smokers; and
12  WHEREAS, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
13  estimates that radon is responsible for approximately 21,000
14  lung cancer deaths each year; and
15  WHEREAS, In Illinois, 41% of homes, and an even higher
16  percentage of schools and commercial buildings, have high
17  radon levels; and
18  WHEREAS, Any building in Illinois may have elevated levels
19  of radon, even if neighboring buildings do not, and elevated
20  levels pose a serious health threat to Illinois citizens; and

1  WHEREAS, Testing for radon is simple and inexpensive, and
2  identified radon problems can be fixed; and
3  WHEREAS, The Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the
4  U.S. Office of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Environmental
5  Protection Agency are supporting efforts to encourage
6  homeowners to test their homes for radon, to mitigate elevated
7  levels of radon, and to build new homes with radon-resistant
8  materials and features; therefore, be it
