1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Battle of Midway is widely considered one of
3 the most significant naval battles in the Pacific Theater of
4 World War II, taking place from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942,
5 only six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor; Midway
6 Island is located in the Pacific Ocean almost directly between
7 the United States and Japan, making it a key target in the war;
8 and
9 WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy's victory in the battle, and
10 subsequent defense of the major base on Midway Island,
11 effectively turned the tides of World War II in the Pacific; as
12 a result of the U.S. victory, Japan abandoned its plan to
13 expand its reach in the Pacific and remained on the defensive
14 for the remainder of World War II; and
15 WHEREAS, In 1949, the Chicago Municipal Airport was
16 renamed Midway in honor of the hard fought Battle of Midway;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, June 2025 marks the 83rd anniversary of the
19 Battle of Midway; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2025
