1616 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
1717 2 General Assembly to recognize June as National
1818 3 Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month.
1919 4 Whereas, The United States Centers for Disease Control and
2020 5 Prevention has found that cytomegalovirus is the most common
2121 6 infectious cause of birth defects in the United States;
2222 7 Whereas, Nearly one in three children are already infected
2323 8 with cytomegalovirus by five years of age;
2424 9 Whereas, About one out of every 200 infants is born with
2525 10 congenital cytomegalovirus;
2626 11 Whereas, About one in five babies born with congenital
2727 12 cytomegalovirus will suffer long term health problems such as
2828 13 hearing loss, vision loss, intellectual disability, microcephaly,
2929 14 lack of coordination or weakness, or seizures;
3030 15 Whereas, Fifteen percent of babies with congenital
3131 16 cytomegalovirus will not have symptoms at birth but will later
3232 17 develop hearing loss;
3333 18 Whereas, In 2011, the United States Congress passed a
3434 19 resolution designating June as National Cytomegalovirus
3535 20 Awareness Month, thus illustrating the importance of raising
3636 21 awareness of cytomegalovirus;
3737 22 Whereas, Antiviral medications may improve hearing and
3838 23 developmental outcomes in babies with congenital
3939 24 cytomegalovirus; and

4141 1 Whereas, Diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of children
4242 2 with congenital cytomegalovirus can help improve their health
4343 3 outcomes: Therefore,
4444 4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
4545 5 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
4646 6 the Senate concurring:
4747 7 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly is urged to
4848 8 recognize June as National Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month.
4949 9 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
5050 10 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
5151 11 office of State Representative Chris Campbell for distribution.
