1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
2 General Assembly to recognize June as National
3 Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month.
4 Whereas, The United States Centers for Disease Control and
5 Prevention has found that cytomegalovirus is the most common
6 infectious cause of birth defects in the United States; 
7 Whereas, Nearly one in three children are already infected
8 with cytomegalovirus by five years of age; 
9 Whereas, About one out of every 200 infants is born with
10 congenital cytomegalovirus; 
11 Whereas, About one in five babies born with congenital
12 cytomegalovirus will suffer long term health problems such as
13 hearing loss, vision loss, intellectual disability, microcephaly,
14 lack of coordination or weakness, or seizures;
15 Whereas, Fifteen percent of babies with congenital
16 cytomegalovirus will not have symptoms at birth but will later
17 develop hearing loss; 
18 Whereas, In 2011, the United States Congress passed a
19 resolution designating June as National Cytomegalovirus
20 Awareness Month, thus illustrating the importance of raising
21 awareness of cytomegalovirus; 
22 Whereas, Antiviral medications may improve hearing and
23 developmental outcomes in babies with congenital
24 cytomegalovirus; and

1 Whereas, Diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of children
2 with congenital cytomegalovirus can help improve their health
3 outcomes: Therefore,
4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
6 the Senate concurring:
7 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly is urged to
8 recognize June as National Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month.
9 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
10 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
11 office of State Representative Chris Campbell for distribution.
